We’re in the business of fun. We just happen to make really great candles.

At Coal and Canary, we believe a candle should do more than make a room smell good. It should set the mood, make you smile, spark a conversation and turn an ordinary Tuesday into something worth lighting a candle for.
​
Our luxury candles are hand-poured in small batches with a premium vegan soy and vegetable wax blend, true-to-scent fragrance oils, and our signature crackling wooden wicks made from FSC Certified Wood.
​
Every scent is thoughtfully created, every candle is hand-poured with care, and every detail - from the fragrance to the packaging - is designed to feel just a little bit special.
​
The result? Beautiful candles with big personality, incredible fragrance and a clean, even burn - all housed in vessels that are re-usable drinking glasses.
​
Made for birthdays, breakups, besties, bad days, big wins, quiet nights, dinner parties and absolutely no reason at all.

OUR WHY
​
It started with a little wax, a lot of heart, and absolutely no idea where it would lead.
​
Coal and Canary began in 2014, when founder Amanda Buhse started making candles in her kitchen with her best friend. What began as a fun, creative hobby came during a life-changing chapter - Amanda was recovering from a near-death experience that had completely shifted the way she looked at life.
​
Making candles became more than a distraction. It was a creative outlet, a reason to gather around the kitchen table, and a reminder that even after the hardest moments, there is still so much beauty, joy and possibility ahead.
​
That little hobby eventually became Coal and Canary.
​
Today, we still believe in the same thing we did around that kitchen table: the little things matter.
​
Lighting your favourite candle on a Tuesday. Making your home smell incredible just because. Celebrating the big moments - and making the ordinary ones feel a little more special. Giving someone a gift that says "I saw this and thought of you."

Every Coal and Canary candle is handcrafted with care, thoughtfully designed, and made to bring a little extra joy into your space. We pair beautiful fragrance with bold personality and a touch of luxury, creating candles that smell as good as they look and never take themselves too seriously.

OUR NAME
​
So… why Coal and Canary?
​
The name Coal and Canary is inspired by the days when miners brought canaries underground to help detect unsafe air conditions - but we gave the story a much happier ending.
​
In our version, the canary survives and thrives.
​
From the very beginning, thoughtfully chosen ingredients have been an important part of Coal and Canary. We wanted to create beautiful, deliciously scented candles without compromising on what goes into them - especially knowing that our candles are burned in homes shared with the people (and pets!) we love.
​
So our little canary became a symbol of that philosophy: a happier ending to an old story, and a reminder to be thoughtful about what we bring into our spaces.

Coal is where the story started. The canary is why ours ends differently.
